A federal lawsuit has been filed against Mecklenburg and Rockingham Counties in North Carolina by the family of a 17-year old who hung himself in the Mecklenburg County Jail in November, 2020. The lawsuit alleges that after the teen’s death, the jail staff manipulated documents to make it appear that they checked on him more often than they did. The Charlotte Observer. Charlotte, NC.
April 14, 2022. Red River County, TX has agreed to pay the family of Christopher Wayne Cabler $825,000 to settle a lawsuit arising out of Cabler’s suicide by hanging at the jail in May, 2019. Texarkana Gazette. Clarksville, TX.
April 10, 2022. After being arrested for drug charges and driving on a suspended license, Douglas Kennedy was in the Bullitt County Detention Center for one week before committing suicide by hanging himself with bed sheets. WDRB.com. Shepherdsville, KY.
April 7, 2022. Jason Thomas Hager died by suspected suicide in the Kane County jail. He had been found incompetent to stand trial the day before, and was waiting for a bed to open up in the state hospital for him to be treated and returned to competency. St. George News. St. George, UT.
April 7, 2022. Mackenzie Catalano died by suicide by hanging at the Arizona State Prison Complex in Perryville, Arizona. She was due to be released three months later. She is the sixth person to commit suicide in an Arizona prison since July, 2021. The Arizona Republic. Goodyear, AZ.
April 7, 2022. The family of Michael Kozletsky has filed a lawsuit against Menard County, TX alleging wrongful death after he committed suicide by hanging in May, 2020. April 4, 2022. A federal judge has allowed a wrongful death lawsuit to continue against two separate Colorado counties for the suicide of an inmate who hung himself and remained undiscovered for two hours, despite being on suicide watch. Since Archuleta County had an agreement to house its inmates in La Plata County, the judge ruled that Archuleta County had an obligation for the safety of its detainees even after they left the jurisdiction. Feb. 3, 2022. The family of Lee Creely, an inmate who died in the Chatham County jail, has filed a lawsuit against the jail’s administrators and its medical staff.
